David Diehl hat sich in seiner Arbeit seit Ende der 1990er-Jahre immer wieder mit der gesellschaftspolitischen Bedeutung populärkultureller Phänomene und speziell mit ihrer spezifischen parareligiösen Funktion beschäftigt. ICONS erzählt nun die Geschichte einer Serie von über 70 Gemälden, welche zwischen 2013 und 2020 entstanden sind und die thematisch jenes Terrain bespielen, welches die Kirche in den letzten Jahrzehnten zunehmend an den Volkssport Fussball abtreten musste. Sócrates, Zidane, Andrés Escobar – jedes Porträt erzählt eine eigene Geschichte. Eine spezielle Rolle nimmt einmal mehr Diego Maradona ein, dessen ikonisch überhöhtes Porträt – einmal entlassen aus dem Zürcher Atelier, in welchem es entstanden ist – eine Reise angetreten hat: «heim» nach Napoli, wo es in hundert- und tausendfach reproduzierter Vielfältigkeit im Zusammenhang mit Maradonas Tod seine Funktion als referenzierendes und reflektierendes Kunstwerk endgültig verloren hat und zum Gegenstand real existierender religiöser Praxis geworden ist, zur Ikone.
